Richard Cohen claims he can turn gay men straight through “reparative therapy”. Some of his techniques are “touch therapy” and ” bio energetics”. Cohen feels homosexuality comes from a childhood trauma in which the person needs to heal from it. Cohen was once gay but turned himself straight through this process. Does it really work?

On Tuesday, Nov. 3 2009, Maine voted whether Gay Marriage should be legalized. Many people hoped that Maine would go against the grain and be one of the few states to legalize gay marriage. However, Maine REJECTED legalizing gay marriage. The vote was 53-47 and many gay activists went home teary eyed feeling defeated. 31 states have rejected legalizing gay marriage including New Jersey, New York, and California. This bothers me because I feel this is unfair to homosexuals. It states in the Declaration of independence that “ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL.” If this is true,why are homosexuals being denied the right to marriage? This makes the United States a hypocrite of the Declaration of Independence. I consider marriage a personal choice. Everyone should be able to CHOOSE whether they want to get married regardless of sexual preference. How can we truly be equal with restrictions on marriage?

Growing up, I have always heard you can’t do this because you’re a GIRL or you can’t do that because your GIRL. The major one I hated was the curfew time. My brother was able to stay out until midnight with his friends. However, I had to be in the house by ten pm and to make matters worst he is two years YOUNGER than me. Being a girl, sometimes suck because parents don’t have the same standards for both genders. Usually freedom for girls is limited and freedom for boys is limitless. WHY IS IT NOT FAIR? Even in hollywood sexism exists for teenagers Miley Cyrus and Taylor Lautner.

Early this year, Miley Cyrus, 15, was chasitised for wearing a sheet that exposed her right shoulder and back in “Vanity Fair.” The public’s outrage was so bad that Disney made Cyrus publicly apologize for the OVEREXPOSURE of her skin. However, Taylor Lautner, 17, is snapping pictures left and right shirtless and no one is complaining at all. WHY? Obviously it is because he is a GUY. Granted there is a two-year difference but both are underaged and have a HUGE adolescent fan base. Gee, When will Sexism DIE?

HOW IS HOMOSEXUALITY CREATED???

This video targets how homosexuality is possibly created. Is it GENETIC? This video is really long but interesting to watch. There was a study created using rats to test homosexuality. In the study, the scientist discovered that homosexuality does not come from genetics but hormones. There is a strong connection to believe that it could be the same for humans. POSSIBLY NOT GENETICS BUT HORMONES. Another study was created which connected the number of right handed older brothers a male have to the higher chances of him being gay if he is right handed too. This is called “the older brother effect.” The study hasn’t been proven true but many are considering it for males.

Early this year, Larry King interviewed 15-year-old Ryan and his mother, Fran, about Ryan’s transition from female to male. Fran claims to accept Ryan as a boy, but she continues to address him as a female. Fran calls Ryan by his birth name, Sarah, and uses female pronouns when talking about him. Fran thinks her daughter is going through a phase.

After writing a post about Jazzy, the transgendered 7-year-old, I wanted to hear how people felt about her. I decided to conduct an interview with Bullar Valcin, a fourth year biology major at Saint Peter’s College.

Q: After reading my blog and watching the video, what do you think about Jazzy?

Bullar Valcin: I am happy that his parents are letting him live how he wants to but I think it is a phase. He wants to be a girl because he sees that it is certain things that girls can do that boys should not do. He will eventually grow out of this and be a boy again. I believe the only reason he is acting this way is because his parents are supporting it. Children thrive off of attention and he is definitely getting it.
When I was a kid I wanted to be a boy. I used to sneak and dress up in my brothers’ clothes. I played with my brothers’ toys and hung only with guys until I was about 11. The minute I hit puberty all of that boy stuff flew out the window.

Q: Does Jazzy’s age matter when deciding to be another sex?

Bullar Valcin: I believe as long as you can talk, you are able to decide what you want. However, parents should know better than to give a child everything they ask for. Children are fickle and change their minds rapidly. I would accept his decision if he was older maybe in his teen years. He would have more time to figure out his identity and figure out if this is something he truly wants.

Q:Would you accept your child if he or she came to you wanting to be the opposite sex?

Bullar Valcin: Honestly, I don’t know. It is such a hard decision to make because I want my child to be normal. However, I want my child to be who he or she really is. I know it was a hard decision for Jazzy’s parents.

Q:From a scientific stand point, has Jazzy’s mental state derived from a mistake in the genes?

Bullar Valcin: I do not believe that it formed in his genes but from his environment. He is that way because of the enviroment he is living in. We need to examine his surroundings and find why he came to this mental state.

TRANSGENDER CHILD

I was reading this news story that ABC News published in 2007 about a transgendered child. The story was about a 6-year-old boy who believes he should have been a girl. The parents of the child are letting the boy openly live his life as a girl. He is in the early stages of transition from male to female. His name is Jazzy. I continued to track Jazzy and found a you tube video of her speaking about how she feels. She was 7 years old when she made the YouTube video.

I was watching ” The Secret of Lives of Women” on WE TV. The story was about three female body builders obsessed with working out. Their bodies are extremely defined and muscular. The women explained the difficulties of being in public. They always receive belittling comments from strangers who believe they are trying to be men. One body builder says, ” It is hard trying to find a man who will accept me for who I am. I want a man to see my femininity. ” Why are women with muscles compared to men?

My reaction to the show was “EWWW.” This was my first reaction because majority of people do not have BULGING muscles. However, the more I watched the show I became interested in their lives. These women are incredibly healthy and want the same things as the average woman.They want to get married, have children, and always look “sexy.” One body builder says, ” I want to have a relationship and children someday.” Is having too much muscle considered manly?

Lately, gender topics have been spreading like wildfire across the news. One particular person that has many people thinking about gender is Caster Semenya. Her story amazes me because she is a hermaphrodite. According to New York Daily News, Semenya has both male and female organs. WHAT THE HECK? Is the only question that came to my mind when I heard this. Now, I walk around looking at different men and women wondering are they ALLLLLLLLL MAN OR ALLLLLLLL WOMAN. What makes a person a woman? Clearly, Caster is still a woman. From birth, she was raised as a female by her family.
