On Tuesday, Nov. 3 2009, Maine voted whether Gay Marriage should be legalized. Many people hoped that Maine would go against the grain and be one of the few states to legalize gay marriage. However, Maine REJECTED legalizing gay marriage. The vote was 53-47 and many gay activists went home teary eyed feeling defeated. 31 states have rejected legalizing gay marriage including New Jersey, New York, and California. This bothers me because I feel this is unfair to homosexuals. It states in the Declaration of independence that “ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL.” If this is true, why are homosexuals being denied the right to marriage? This makes the United States a hypocrite of the Declaration of Independence. I consider marriage a personal choice. Everyone should be able to CHOOSE whether they want to get married regardless of sexual preference. How can we truly be equal with restrictions on marriage?

Your first paragraph has a factual error. Maine would not have been the first state to legalize gay marriage. Four states already do and New Hampshire will join these states in Jan. 2010.
Ooops I just checked into that! Def just changed it! Thanks
